The practice of setting the clock forward by one hour during the warmer part of the year is so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less darkness.

George Hudson, a British-born New Zealand entomologist, and astronomer proposed daylight saving in 1895. Hudson worked a shift job and coveted his after-work daylight hours which led him to propose a two-hour daylight-saving shift. We credit him with proposing modern-day daylight saving time-based on his writings from 1895 to 1898. They made it law in New Zealand in 1916, and soon other country’s followed suit.

In the United States, the Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the system of uniform Daylight Saving Time throughout the country. It starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November, with the time changes taking place at 2:00 a.m. local time. Not everyone is so keen on the change.
